Maybe you’re forgetting you have a husband and child in another life. Detective Williams heard Detective DeGuilio’s voice inside of her skull. She lay stretched out on the queen size bed which required most the floor space inside her hotel room.

“If only you knew.” She spoke out loud trusting the walls to keep her secret. “A husband and a child would definitely be in another life. I don’t have time for a family, I’m too damn busy chasing bad guys.” Detective Williams admired her reflection in the full-length mirror hanging from the bathroom’s door.

“I’m starring in reality show. The Adventures of a Federal Agent.” Adjusting the pillow being used to prop her head up, she permitted her mind to reverse through time. Thoughts of how easy it was to penetrate Mr. Salache’s nephew Fredrico’s inner circle manufactured a smile on her nearly flawless facial features. She’d been hypnotizing men with her beauty for as long as she could remember.

Fredrico had basically demanded to be added to the list when she’d given him the option of giving up his uncle and his associates versus doing a really, long stretch in a federal penitentiary. Becoming an informer seemed to be Fredrico’s lifelong dream.

Things were looking so promising with Fredrico’s invaluable information. Making a bust of Mr. Salache’s magnitude could only be considered a guaranteed career advancement. Detective Williams had begun to see herself as Special Agent in Charge LaQuetta Williams. She was merely indictments away. That’s when, overnight, the worst-case scenario imaginable transpired. Fredrico vanished. Poof! Here today, gone tomorrow.

The last communication they’d had was of him calling to inform her of Mr. Salache’s scheduled demonstration, and then the beginning of her nightmare. The earth seemed to swallow Fredrico whole. Without Fredrico there wouldn’t be any promotions, no doors bearing her moniker in bureau gold letters. She’d be destined to suffer through a career of undercover field work.

Detective Williams rolled over. Fluffing her pillows, she reminisced on how she’d second guessed herself. Looking through the perfect vision of hindsight, Detective Williams had spent months cursing herself for not doing more to protect an informer of Fredrico’s worth. Months later, she felt the results of it. There she was on another undercover assignment, this one to gather information about a luxury car theft ring being operated from within New York City’s Police Department. Her hopes of advancing her career were dissipating quickly, and like a blessing from above, the heavens deeded she was deserving of another opportunity. A homicide investigation turned out to be the key to her future. The victim miraculously had ties to Fredrico. Fredrico had mentioned a “T-Low” on several occasions while making his report.

Of course, with Fredrico most likely being as dead as T-Low was, making a case against Mr. Salache and his associates was a longshot at best. But longshots are also possibilities, and possibilities are various forms of hope. Hope provides the reason to go on aspiring to move forward.

Thoughts of her current assignment reinvented the smile that had faded away.
